Edwards offers day programs in Aloha and Milwaukie that provide alternatives to employment for people who are retired or who simply want a daily social network.
At the day centers, staff members lead activities that include arts and crafts, pet therapy, field trips, movie outings, physical therapy (if needed) and other group activities. In the evening, these facilities are used for a variety of classes ranging from social-sexual training, hygiene instruction and choir.
Edwards Center’s Milwaukie program is one of the only of its kind in Oregon serving medically fragile adults. A ratio of one staff to three clients is necessary to meet the needs of this special population. In many cases clients have both developmental disabilities and cerebral palsy.
“Our activity centers give clients a place to go each morning where they see familiar faces and have an opportunity to make friends,” says Marlys Mayer, who has been a rehabilitation manager in Milwaukie for 18 years.
Edwards Center can provide transportation to and from activity centers in specially equipped vans and/or assist clients in learning how to use public transportation.
