Shining Star Award Recipients
To honor our Founder, Jean Edwards, on her remarkable 80th birthday in 2023, we established the Shining Star Award. This annual award recognizes an individual or organization whose advocacy, support, and dedication have significantly advanced the mission of the Edwards Center.

2025 Shining Stars
Judith & Jerry
Ackaret
This year's Shining Star Award, was the amazing Judith and Jerry Ackaret, who first became volunteers when Judith’s sister, Donna, lived in our Matthew House. Judith brightened the lives of our medically fragile residents by decorating for every holiday and organizing festive parties. Though Donna passed away in 2015, Judith, Jerry, and their friends and families continue to support our community.
They’ve led holiday events, created decorations, and organized activities, while Judith crafts birthday cards for our residents. Judith also serves as a Vox representative for our Lynne House, showcasing her unwavering commitment.
We are immensely grateful for all that Judith and Jerry do!
2024 Shining Star
Gail Grodem
Gail has been a tireless volunteer, serving as a board member and Vox House representative for two homes. She has consistently ensured that residents without family support are cared for during Christmas and on their birthdays.
Additionally, Gail has graciously opened her home for fundraising events and donated generously to fund exciting activities and monthly gatherings.

At every event, Gail has been a steadfast presence, helping in the kitchen, setting up for activities, and assisting at the carnival.
We are immensely grateful for her commitment to our mission and her unwavering support.

2023 Shining Star
Pat Reser
It was only fitting that the inaugural award was presented to Pat Reser, a former student of Jean’s at Portland State University. Pat, who began her career as a special educator, went on to become an inspiring civic leader, successful businesswoman, philanthropist, and generous supporter of the Edwards Center.

Pat's contributions have significantly impacted our organization, enabling us to add new homes each year, enhance community participation for our residents, and successfully complete Edwards Place.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Pat for believing in our mission and supporting us so wholeheartedly. Her efforts have made a profound difference in the lives of those we serve.
